Update from Dallas
What a roller-coaster this has been! Daniel's rehab in Austin went really well. He had phenomenal therapists and care during his stay at Texas Neuro Rehab in Austin. Daniel arrived in Austin hardly able to sit up. By the time he left he was nearly able to dress himself, walk around 300 feet with assistance, regained bladder and bowel continence and greatest of all he relearned to eat and swallow. Gaining this much function back he was quickly outgrowing the Austin rehab. Daniel needed a facility that would help get him to the next level of gaining back as much independence as possible. We were introduced to a facility called CNS in Dallas. It's a program where the patient lives in an assisted living style apartment but gets 5 to 8 hours of therapy a day. All done in a style where the patient feels like they are living at home and going to work for therapy. We prayed and hoped that the insurance would approve him to come to Dallas and it finally happened. We arrived Thursday, October 25 and Daniel went through a number of test and evaluations to see where his baseline was and what his therapy program would look like. Every individual that worked with Daniel continued to tell us that they believed he had so much potential to improve. We really believe so also and can see how this incredible facility will help him get to a high level of independence. Therapy was going very well and Daniel seemed to really be enjoying himself. They also provided housing for us on campus (we did have to move rooms about every 3 days but still soooo appreciative). Our original plan was to spend about two weeks here in Dallas and make sure everything was going smooth and then go to Midland to get the house prepared for when he got out of rehab. Unfortunately on Thursday, November 1st Daniel was getting ready for therapy when he started vomiting and had a fever.
The facility sent him to the E.R. because he had a very sudden and severe decline in cognitive function. He couldn't respond verbally or physically to commands, he seemed to have lost all control and awareness. The doctors determined that it was from some sort of infection and the infection was also causing his seizures to go out of control. They started him on antibiotics and within about 3 days he started getting back to normal. The doctors want to keep him on the antibiotics for about two weeks to ensure that the medication takes out whatever the infection is (the sources is still unknown). One problem with being checked into the hospital is that the insurance will not allow him to be in two facilities at the same time. Therefore CNS had to put his account on hold. What this means is that when it comes time for Daniel to be discharged from the hospital we will have to once again resubmit to his insurance for approval to go back to this amazing rehab facility here in Dallas. So now please pray that when he gets released from the hospital insurance would approve him quickly and allow for a seamless transition to get back into rehab. We saw the Lord work miracles getting him to Dallas and know that He is able to do it again. Again, thank you so much for your continued prayer and support. We continue to trust that the Lord is in control and that He has a plan even if we don't understand it sometimes. We are so thankful that the Lord has placed each one of you in our lives. The value of community and family is realized so much when things get challenging. We are praying that we have an awesome update for ya'll around November 15th when he gets discharged from the hospital!!!
